Purpose

This policy outlines the responsible use of artificial intelligence (AI) writing tools in the creation, editing, and publication of content by the Edgewater Gazette. It ensures transparency, accountability, and ethical standards in our editorial practices.

Scope

This policy applies to all staff, contributors, freelancers, and guest writers who use AI tools to assist in writing, editing, or generating content for print or digital platforms.

Acceptable Use

  • Editorial Assistance: AI tools may be used for brainstorming, outlining, grammar correction, summarization, and style refinement.

  • Content Generation: AI-generated content may be used for routine tasks (e.g., weather blurbs, stock summaries) but must be reviewed and approved by a human editor before publication.

  • Attribution: Any article or section substantially generated by AI must be disclosed with a note indicating AI assistance.

Prohibited Use

  • Plagiarism: AI tools must not be used to replicate or paraphrase copyrighted material without proper attribution.

  • Sensitive Topics: AI-generated content must not be used for reporting on sensitive issues (e.g., crime, politics, health) without thorough human oversight.

  • Deception: AI must not be used to impersonate individuals, fabricate quotes, or create misleading narratives.

Editorial Oversight

  • All AI-assisted content must be reviewed by a qualified editor prior to publication.

  • Editors are responsible for verifying facts, ensuring clarity, and maintaining journalistic standards.

  • The Gazette reserves the right to reject or revise any AI-generated material that does not meet editorial expectations.

Transparency & Disclosure

  • Readers will be informed when AI tools play a significant role in content creation.

  • Disclosures will appear at the end of the article or in the byline, as appropriate.

Data Privacy

  • AI tools must be used in compliance with our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection laws.

  • Personal data must not be entered into AI systems unless explicitly authorized.

Training & Accountability

  • Staff will receive training on ethical AI use and best practices.

  • Violations of this policy may result in editorial review, retraction of content, or disciplinary action.
