DeLeon Springs, FL — November 14, 2025

After nearly two days of evading law enforcement in the dense swamps surrounding DeLeon Springs State Park, Earl Dorey is now in custody following a dramatic pursuit that began Wednesday afternoon.

🚨 The Pursuit

Deputies with the Volusia Sheriff’s Office (VSO) first encountered Dorey on Wednesday when he fled in a stolen truck. The chase led into the wooded area near DeLeon Springs State Park, where Dorey abandoned the vehicle and ran deeper into the swamp.

During the pursuit, deputies reported that Dorey pointed a firearm at them before turning the weapon on himself. He then disappeared into the thick vegetation, sparking an extensive search effort that involved multiple units, including specialized K-9 teams.

🐕 K-9 Unit Apprehension

The breakthrough came this afternoon when a VSO K-9 unit located Dorey after his prolonged stay in the swamp. Exhausted and dehydrated, he surrendered without further incident. Deputies noted that his only complaints were thirst and pain in his legs after days of exposure to the harsh terrain.

🏥 Medical Evaluation and Charges

Dorey is being transported to a local hospital for evaluation before being booked into the Volusia County Jail. Authorities confirmed he faces multiple charges, including:

  • Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer (x2)

  • Possession of a weapon by a convicted felon

  • Fleeing from law enforcement

  • Possession of methamphetamine

In addition to these new charges, Dorey will also be held on outstanding warrants.

👥 Others Involved

Two other individuals who were in the stolen vehicle with Dorey were apprehended earlier in the week. Their arrests helped narrow the search area and allowed deputies to focus resources on locating Dorey in the swamp.

🌾 Community Impact

The incident drew significant attention from residents in the DeLeon Springs area, many of whom were concerned about the prolonged manhunt near the popular state park. Sheriff’s officials reassured the public that despite the tense moments during the pursuit, no deputies or civilians were injured.

📌 Closing Note

With Dorey now in custody, the Volusia Sheriff’s Office emphasized the effectiveness of its K-9 units and the persistence of deputies who worked tirelessly to bring the situation to a safe conclusion.
