FLAGLER COUNTY, Fla. — The Flagler County Sheriff’s Office is mourning the loss of retired K-9 Jax, a yellow Labrador retriever who faithfully served the community for nearly eight years and became a beloved presence at Flagler Palm Coast High School. Jax passed away at the age of 11, leaving behind a legacy of protection, companionship, and service.
Born on February 14, 2014, Jax began his career in March 2015 as an explosive ordinance detection K-9, working alongside then-Sergeant Jon Welker. His sharp instincts and disciplined training made him a vital part of the Sheriff’s Office, ensuring the safety of schools, courthouses, and public spaces across Flagler County.
In 2019, Jax’s role expanded beyond security detail when he was assigned to Deputy Jason Williams, a school resource deputy (SRD) at Flagler Palm Coast High School. There, Jax quickly became more than a working dog—he was a trusted companion to students, faculty, and staff. His presence in the classroom brought comfort and reassurance, bridging the gap between law enforcement and the community’s youth.
When Deputy Williams transferred to another school in 2021, Jax remained at FPC and was partnered with Master Deputy Nicholas Champion. Together, they continued to safeguard the campus until Jax’s retirement in January 2023. By the end of his career, Jax had been deployed 749 times, a testament to his tireless dedication and impact on the community.
Beyond his official duties, Jax was known for his “field trips” to other schools, where he visited students and conducted security checks. His friendly demeanor and wagging tail made him a favorite among children, parents, and staff alike. Sheriff Rick Staly noted that Jax’s service extended far beyond detection work—he embodied the Sheriff’s Office’s commitment to building trust and fostering safety in schools.
Upon retirement, Jax lived with Master Deputy Champion and his family, alongside his successor, K-9 Nitro. Surrounded by love and care, Jax enjoyed his final years as a cherished family member, no longer bound by duty but still deeply connected to the community he served.
Sheriff Staly and the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office are asking residents to keep Chief Welker, Deputy Williams, and Master Deputy Champion in their thoughts as they grieve the loss of their loyal partner. “Jax was more than a K-9,” the Sheriff’s Office shared. “He was a protector, a friend, and a symbol of the bond between law enforcement and the community.”
As the county reflects on Jax’s years of service, his paw prints remain firmly embedded in the hearts of those he touched. His legacy will live on in the countless students he protected, the deputies he worked alongside, and the community he helped keep safe.
Rest in peace, Jax. You will be greatly missed. 💚🐾
